Boulder Permaculture Ecovillage Vision and Mission Statements

Why we are creating an Ecovillage?

From a place of deep love of the Earth we find ourselves dissatisfied with a culture of isolating competiveness, wasteful and indulgent consumption and disconnection from Nature. We are using more energy and resources, and have made more trash and pollution than ever before.  The damage that has been done, the state of corruption, the imbalance of power and the inequity of wealth are all a part of a huge economic system that is controlled by very few and is not sustainable. This economic system is based on unlimited growth, unlimited resources and cheap energy, all of which are in decline.  The current system has lost the sense of community and wants us to believe that possessions means happiness, that we are supposed to go it alone, that we are dependent on the system and that there are no other options.  In response, we are creating a Permaculture Eco Village, to learn to live and work together, consciously interdependent with this beautiful planet for ourselves, our children and future generations.

Vision Statement

We are a multi-generational ecovillage based on Permaculture principles of respect, connection and conscious interdependence with all life.  We are creating a more compassionate, harmonious and egalitarian community honoring each individual's unique contribution to create a better life for us and future generations.

Mission Statement

1)     Sustainability & Restoration:   To utilize Permaculture principles to develop a sustainable small village of 10-100+/- people. Permaculture combines carefully selected appropriate technologies with indigenous wisdom to create innovative systems that integrate human, animal, plant and mineral life and emulates natural systems.  We encourage the use of local, natural building materials, and having a small ecological footprint.  We utilize greenhouses, orchards, animals, off-grid energy sources, alternative transportation, cottage industries, organic farming, to create sustainable and restorative lifestyles.

2)     Community:  To create a way of life that will include and honor all of its members.  We encourage tolerance with accountability, while respecting and supporting each person’s evolving life purpose.  We are creating an environment that actively nurtures the healing of the Earth and each other.  We support alternative health modalities and healthy lifestyles.  We offer shared community space such as kitchens, meeting rooms, classrooms, performance spaces, and guest accommodations.   We value a balance between personal and communal time and space. We want our physical and social structures to nourish positive growth. We encourage deep listening, open discourse and respect. We support creative innovation and diversity and we build on each other’s truth by practicing empathy and kindness.

3)     Social Organization:   We work and play to create a decision-making environment that solicits the participation and input of all active community members. We engage the power of the group to invent policies that balance the needs of individuals and the greater good of the community. We nurture and explore meeting-organization and communication methods that maintain brevity and efficiency. We choose to focus our collective efforts on respect, creativity, positive compromise and love.

4)     Economics:   To cooperatively generate basic needs that invest in a long-term, resilient model of living. To create a self-sufficient, localized, debt-free, homestead independent of the growth-based global economy. We share resources and create an ecologically integrated community that has a small footprint based on restorative permaculture principles and values.

5)     Spirituality: To use the resources and mindfulness of the community to support personal growth and promote a collective sacredness between ourselves and the land. We aspire to simplicity, compassion, safety, intimacy, and trust, sharing our collective wisdom and creativity. Specific elements may include group meditation, sacred architecture, rituals and rites of passage, the arts and sciences, exploring social transformation, and holistic healing. In order to become conscious of our habitual patterns and cultural expectations, we will experiment with creative modalities such as silence that support an evolution free of evangelism, gossip, and dogma.

6)     Education: To provide a space that is warm and welcoming which offers a variety of learning opportunities for all age levels. To develop educational objectives and materials, informing ourselves and potential new members about our community, its values, its methods, its culture, and its organization. To invite other communities and educational organizations to initiate, participate, and/or collaborate in workshops, seminars, and internships. To create and promote educational events that inform others about community models.
